A little bit about Hedgeview Farm

The Hedgeview Farm property was cleared back in 1873 and by 1906 it was farmed by the Matheson family of Pembroke. The Matheson’s sponsored the first Jansens to emigrate from Europe in 1953, and when the Jansen family eventually took over the farm in 1969, the farm was given the name “Hedgeview Farm”. It was a family-run dairy farm until 2006.

Today Hedgeview Farm remains a family farm where you can find all 4 generations any given day. Although the dairy cows are no longer here, their “legacy” lives on in a couple very well rested and fertile grazing pastures ideally suited to growing some delicious organic vegetables. Brenna operates a 1.5 – 2 acre market garden on the grazing pastures.

Much of the dairy farm has been repurposed for a mixed farming operation, surrounding the market garden. The cow stanchions and infrastructure from inside the dairy barn have been dismantled, cleaned up, and re-assembled as a greenhouse frame for seedlings and herbs as well as a curing house for our garlic and squash. The old heifer yard has been transformed into an area to house perhaps some of the happiest chickens in the Ottawa Valley. The former bale yard is now home to our veggie cool room and washing station, and the Milkhouse has been converted to a small on farm shop for our CSA members housing veggies as well as other local products.

Continuing the tradition of family farming requires adaptation. It is clear that keeping a small family farm financially viable is a huge challenge, but can be made possible through efficient farming. We are humbled by the people actively seeking out and choosing locally and sustainably grown products and we are eternally grateful for the support from our community.

Hedgeview Farm Organics is all about fresh, truly local, delicious food that is good for your body, good for our environment, and good for our local communities. We are so proud to produce food for our neighbours here in the valley and we hope you enjoy!
